FEP | PFA | ETFE | PTFE Fine Powder | |
The development of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) was a significant breakthrough in polymer science. The special processing requirements of PTFE led researchers to develop a melt–processable version of PTFE resulting in FEP. This new resin was compatible with existing processing methods and equipment. Melt processability also allowed for long continuous extrusions of FEP in applications such as wire and cable wrapping.
While similar to PTFE in many of its properties, FEP has its own preferred attributes. It has a slightly higher coefficient of friction, lower continuous service temperature, and is more transparent than PTFE. FEP also offers lower gas and vapor permeability properties and excellent UV resistance. FEP’s expanded attributes make it ideal for a diverse range of applications from environmental monitoring equipment to medical devices.
|
PFA is well recognized for its ability to maintain its integrity in extreme temperatures even when exposed to caustic chemicals. PFA also comes in high purity versions that can be extruded into tubing forms and is SEMI F–57 certified. High Purity PFA tubing is used in critical fluid transport tubing applications that demand a very low level of extractables. PFA can withstand temperature environments of up to 500 °F / 260 °C and can be extruded in convoluted tubing forms that provide a highly flexible conduit.
The qualities of PFA include excellent lubricity, clarity, flexibility, and chemical resistance. This versatility has led to PFA being a popular material selection in the semiconductor, chemical, energy, aerospace, automotive, pharmaceutical, fiber optics, and medical industries.
|
ETFE is distinguished from perfluopolymers (totally fluorinated polymers) as a partially fluorinated copolymer of ethylene and TFE. This chemical modification provides significantly higher strength relative to PTFE, FEP or PFA. It is less flexible than PTFE, but has superior impact strength, abrasion and cut through resistance. Addition of a third component to the chemical structure creates a modified ETFE that has lower weight per unit volume, is stiffer and tougher than PTFE, PFA or FEP. These properties allow it to withstand greater physical abuse during its lifetime. For example, glass reinforced ETFE has outstanding wear characteristics and may be used for bearing applications. ETFE is also suitable for pump impellers or moving parts of equipment that are operating in chemically aggressive environments (check to ensure chemical compatibility). |
The unique properties of PTFE have made it the polymer of choice for many applications since it was discovered in the late 1930s. With the lowest coefficient of friction of any polymer we offer and an extremely broad working temperature range, PTFE is ideal for use in products such as catheters for delivery channels for medical devices and wire and cable insulation for aircraft. Because of its unparalleled chemical resistance, PTFE has become an ideal polymer for the chemical and analytical sciences
