| The Challenge of Coloring PFA |
|
Coloring PFA is more demanding than many thermoplastics. Pigments behave like impurities in perfluorinated resins and can negatively affect melt stability and stress-crack resistance (SCR) if not selected and handled correctly. Achieving a successful PFA color or functional concentrate requires careful control of:
Resin match: Masterbatch carrier must be compatible with the target PFA grade and melt flow index (MFI/MFR). Mismatch causes processing issues and poor dispersion.
Pigment choice & loading: Choosing pigments that tolerate PFA processing temperatures and keeping concentrations appropriate for wall thickness and end use are critical. Typical loading ranges are 2–10 wt% depending on color depth and application.
Dispersion quality: Uniform, fine dispersion is essential to avoid localized weak points that cause melt fracture or premature cracking in service.
Processing window control: Compounding and extrusion temperatures, residence time and shear must be optimized to prevent pigment or carrier degradation.
